Agriculture finds new ways to keep flowers free from destructive insect pests. Beltsville, MD, Aug. 30. The bureau of Plant Quarantine and Entomology of the Dept. of Agriculture, has perfected treatments that keep tiny thrips from ruining Gladiola blooms, it worked them out by subjecting the bulbs to various treatments, planting the bulbs in a large field at the experimental station at Beltsville, MD, and examining the plants as they bloomed. The bulbs were numbered and the records of the treatment they received before being planted. A record of the condition of the flowers on the plants from each bulb was also kept. These records showed that treating bulbs with naphthalene flakes - easily obtained at stores dealing in chemicals - killed all thrips present in the [..] the flowers are examined when they reach full [...] is noted and their size is measured, [...] the left and G.V. Contestants for the honor are students of vocational agriculture in highschools throughout the United States. They are judged for thier demonstrated ability to farm by having conducted and outstanding program of supervised farming in connection with agricultural school work, their ability to work with others in agricultural enterprises, and scholastic achievement. Plitt, formerly with the Bureau of Standards and now with the Dept. of Agriculture starts research work at the Agriculture Dept. today, because current fashions are demanding more and more furs, despite a diminishing supply of wild life pelts. The fur industry is turning to fur bearing animals raised in captivity. Dr. Plitt, will investigate fur fiber structure and shape, pigment distribution, density, and relative distribution of underfur and guard hairs of such fur animals as silver foxes, minks, martens, and muskrats. In connection with the program of the A.A.A. to divert surplus cotton from the normal channels of trade for the purpose of developing new commercial uses for cotton and cotton materials, apiculturists of the Dept. of Agriculture at the Beltsville, MD. experimental station are testing the use of cotton fabric as a protective covering for the hives of bees.
