Dangerous spot. Washington, D.C., Dec. 18. Dr. L.H. Adams, Director of the Geological Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution, is standing in what might be a dangerous position should the little steel drum in the cabinet [next to] him explode. In this apparatus the scientists study the behavior and properties of artificial rock under tremendous pressure, a pressure greater than that generated in the breech of the cannon. From these studies is learned something of the behavior of rocks at great depths, 12/18/37

America's petroleum industries pour out fuel and lubricants for the United Nations. An oil well, marked by a tall, steel derrick, is producing oil for the United Nations in the garden of a private home in Oklahoma City, capital of the U.S. southwest state of Oklahoma. Oil industrialists in the U.S. have searched for oil over nearly every foot of the ground in America. They are aided in their search by geology experts trained in reading the surface of the ground as well as test borings to detect the presence of oil, often at great underground depths. In the case of Oklahoma City the town was built before it was discovered that rich petroleum deposits lay under the town site. Oil wells were even drilled on the State House grounds near the state's Capitol building, and the flow from these wells enriched the coffers of the state government. What geologists call the "diligence" of U.S. seekers after oil has made the U.S. a great oil producing nation, though it contains but 15 percent of the proven oil deposits of the world

An artist's concept, by J. J. Carr, of a landing craft air cushion (LCAC) landing on a beach. Riding on a cushion of air held beneath its hull by flexible skirts, the LCAC can deliver a 60 to 75-ton payload to a dry landing over most tides, water depths, underwater obstacles and beach gradients. The craft has a range of about 200 miles, and is 88 feet long, 47 feet wide and 23 feet high

P-29513 BW Range: 31,000 kilometers (19,000 miles) This Voyager 2 image of Miranda was taken shortly before the spacecraft's closet approach to the Uranian moon. The high resolution of 600 meters (2,000 feet) reveals a bewildering variety of fractures, grooves and craters, as well as features of different albedos (reflectances). This clear-filter, narrow-angle view encompasses areas of older, heavily cratered terrain with a wide variety of forms. The grooves and troughs reach depths of a few kilometers and expose materials of different albedos. The great variety of directions of fracture and troughs, and the different densities of impact craters on them, signify a long, complex geologic evolution of this satellite. ARC-1986-A86-7029
