Medlemmar i Linköpings Roddklubb i sina 4-åriga kapproddbåtar.

America's petroleum industries pour out fuel and lubricants for the United Nations. These three new catalytic oil "cracking" units are turning out gasoline for the new machines of war at the plant of a large U.S. refining company in the southern U.S. state of Louisiana. In the eight years of the development of the "cracking" process in producing gasoline, it is estimated that 1,000,000,000 barrels of crude oil have been saved by the oil industry. The "cracking" process subjects crude oil to heat and pressure by which the oil molecules are broken down and made to release more of their derivable elements. The drain of war on such gasoline producing units as these is shown by the fact that the U.S. has manufactured 180,000 planes since December 7, 1941, propelled by gasoline motors. For example, one U.S. Liberator four-motored bomber in a six-hour bombing run consumes 1,800 gallons of gasoline, enough to last the average U.S. civilian motorist from three to five years

P-34713 This Voyager image of Triton reveals two kinds of mid-latitude terrain. Near the center and the lower half of the frame is a gently rolling terrain pock-marked with a modest number of impact craters. The density of impact craters is somewhat similiar to that found on the mare surface of Earth's moon. Crossing this rolling surface are narrow rifts, one of which grades into a chain of craters that probably are of collapse origin. In the upper right part of the frame is a smooth terrain with very sparse impact craters. This terrain evidently has been formed by flooding of the surface by low-viscosity fluids rather late in geologic time. One of the vents from which these fluids erupted probably is represented by a deep, elongate crater near the middle of the right side of the image. Two slightly dark regions underlain by late eruptive material also occur in the left half of the image. Apparent vents for these eruptions are marked by shallow depressiions, which may have been formed by drain back of material at the end of the eruptive episode. ARC-1989-A89-7048

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- In the late afternoon shadows, space shuttle Atlantis is still poised on the pad after its launch on mission STS-122 was postponed Thursday. It sits atop the mobile launcher platform. Shuttle program managers decided at 9:56 a.m. to postpone the launch because of an issue with a fuel cut-off sensor system inside the external fuel tank. This is one of several systems that protect the shuttle's main engines by triggering their shut down if fuel runs unexpectedly low. During countdown activities this morning, two sensors failed a routine prelaunch check. There are four engine cut-off, or ECO, sensors inside the liquid hydrogen section of the tank, and Launch Commit Criteria require three of the four sensor systems to be functioning properly. The tank's liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen was drained from the tank, and preparations will begin for a possible launch attempt Friday. NASA's launch rules have a preplanned procedure that states in the case of ECO sensor system failure, engineers need to drain the tank and verify all the sensors are working as they go dry. Atlantis carries the Columbus Laboratory, the European Space Agency's largest contribution to the construction of the space station. When permanently attached to Node 2, the laboratory will carry out experiments in materials science, fluid physics and biosciences, as well as perform a number of technological applications, in a microgravity environment. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – A large team of specialists works methodically through procedures to "safe" Endeavour as it sits on the runway after landing to complete the 16-day, 6.5-million mile journey on the STS-127 mission to the International Space Station. Trucks are positioned at the shuttle’s nose and tail to drain away hazardous chemicals that may still be inside systems such as the thrusters. Later, the astronauts are expected to walk around Endeavour. Main gear touchdown was at 10:48:08 a.m. EDT. Nose gear touchdown was at 10:48:21 a.m. and wheels stop was at 10:49:13 a.m. Endeavour delivered the Japanese Experiment Module's Exposed Facility and the Experiment Logistics Module-Exposed Section to the International Space Station. The mission was the 29th flight to the station, the 23rd flight of Endeavour and the 127th in the Space Shuttle Program, as well as the 71st landing at Kennedy.
