KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Astronaut Peggy Whitson, a member of the Expedition 5 crew, points to a part of the equipment she is using as part of familiarization for the mission. She and other crew members Commander Valeri Korzun and Sergei Treschev will be traveling to the International Space Station on mission STS-111 and will be replacing the Expedition 4 crew. Part of the payload on STS-111 will be the Mobile Base System, to be installed installed on the Mobile Transporter to complete the Canadian Mobile Servicing System, or MSS. The mechanical arm will then have the capability to "inchworm" from the U.S. Lab fixture to the MSS and travel along the Truss to work sites. STS-111 is scheduled to launch in May 2002 KSC01PD1869

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – At NASA's Kennedy Space Center, a transporter moves the thermal vacuum fixture into the Payload Hazardous Servicing Center. Space shuttle Atlantis is targeted to launch on the STS-125 mission Oct. 8. The mission crew will perform history-making, on-orbit “surgery” on two important science instruments aboard the telescope. After capturing the telescope, two teams of spacewalking astronauts will perform the repairs during five planned spacewalks. Photo credit: NASA/Jack Pfaller KSC-08pd1951

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – In the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, the overhead crane lowers the newly arrived ground support equipment for the STS-125 Hubble Servicing Mission toward a thermal vacuum fixture. The GSE are carriers, or pallets, that will hold equipment in space shuttle Atlantis’ payload bay. Under the protective covering of the carrier can be seen the soft capture mechanism. The carriers will be prepared for the integration of telescope science instruments, both internal and external replacement components, as well as the flight support equipment to be used by the astronauts during the servicing mission. The three payload carriers or pallets are the Flight Support System, the Super Lightweight Interchangeable Carrier and the Orbital Replacement Unit Carrier. At the end of July, a fourth and final carrier, the Multi-Use Lightweight Equipment carrier will join the others in the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility where the Hubble payload is being prepared for launch.
