It was here, in August 1814, that Francis Scott Key wrote the National 'Anthem at dawn's early light after he had watched British naval forces bombard the fort all night long without forcing its surrender. The American defends unfurled a large American flag and the British Admiral in charge gave up and sailed home

Aerial view of the historic 36 gun sailing frigate USS CONSTELLATION (Former IX-20) in a small drydock to the north of Fort McHenry. The ship began a lengthy rebuild last March to correct serious deterioration of the hull structure. In this view extra planking holds the sides in place. Also note that the main gun deck has been removed. The ship is being returned to her Civil War appearance. The RRF cargo ship CAPE ARCHWAY (T-AK-5011) is tied up in the background at the Maryland Port Administration pier No. 3
