Construction on Battery White began in May 1898 and was completed in June 1899. It was named in honor of Army surgeon William J.H. White, who was killed at the Battle of Antietam.

Named for Montgomery C. Meigs, Quartermaster General of the Army from 1861 to 1882, Battery Meigs was an open battery located about 2,500 feet from the original fort. Construction occurred between 1898 and 1902.
