American Red Cross - Canteens - The midnight canteen Red Cross headquarters at 52 Grosvenor Gardens, London. Every American soldier who comes finds a place to sleep in London and there are hundreds of them every night, is welcomed at Red Cross Headquarters, where he gets a fine meal at the canteen counter, and then is given a sleeping place in halls or offices of the big building. The men sleep in long rows on the the floors and tables. This was done for several nights during the period following the signing of the armistice, until other arrangements could be made for taking care of the big influx of American son leave in London

Planning motor car expedition across Asia. Georges-Marie Haardt of Paris will head a scientific party which will start shortly on an expedition which will cover 13,500 miles in Asia, including previously unexplored sections. The expedition will travel in special caterpillar-drive equipped motor cars. Haardt came to Washington to complete arrangements for the National Geographic Society to participate in the project. Poulter, senior scientist and second in command of the Byrd Antarctic expedition of 1933-35, was awarded a special cold medal of the National Geographic Society at a ceremony today at the society's headquarters in Washington. On the Byrd expedition, Dr. Poulter's scientific work included geophysical investigations, studies of ice conditions and movement, the making of magnetic soundings, and observations of meteors and auroral phenomena. Three boxes which Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, and two associates placed in the secret archives of the Smithsonian Institution in 1881 and which have remained [un][?]opened since, were formally opened today in the presence of Bell's two daughters and a group of scientists. The boxes contained among other things the original working model of the first machine ever to record on wax and reproduce the Human voice. In the photograph, left to right: Mrs. David Fairchild, daughter of the inventor; Mrs. Gilbert Grosvenor, another daughter; Alexander Graham Bell, great-grandson of Bell; T.H. Beard, Director or Research of the Dictaphone Co.; Dr. Charles Abbot, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution; and H.W. Dorsey, also of the Smithsonian. 10/27/37
