Swinging from peak to peak. Aerial tramways have proved to be the most efficient means of transportation in many parts of Montenegro. This shows an aerial tramway rebuilt under American direction after its distinction by the Austrians. It was used by the American Red Cross to transport its relief supplies from the bay of Cattare into the hinterland. At one point this cable tram reaches a height of 3,000 feet. Below can be seen an American Red Cross car making the ascent up Jacob's Ladder, the only road across the mountains, covering a distance of ten miles to reach a height of 3,000 feet

Visitors' overlook building at Kentucky Dam. This structure is in the form of an open shed because the other functions of TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) visitors' buildings being accommodated in the nearby construction village, there was need for shelter only at this point. Since the project is in a hot climate, ample ventilation is promoted by the open front, a balustrade height opening toward the back underneath the display and grilles to ventilate the roof space. Most of the displays are arranged as transparencies, with natural illumination during the day, and with floodlights used as substitutes during the night

Demountable employee housing. Three-bedroom war workers' house constructed in five slices. On this project, where the houses went into an existing community in Alabama to provide housing for employees of chemical and metallurgical industries of the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority), the local desire for traditional appearance was accommodated by the use of a pitched roof. Each side of the roof is hinged at the eaves and is laid down, during transport, over the ceiling to bring overall height within normal highway clearances

New craze for idle-rich ... aerial golf. With not enough hazards in an ordinary game of golf, and not enough adventure in flying, some genius has invented aerial golf. The rules are quite simple. There are nine holes, each one an airport near Washington. The play flies to the first airport, tee #1 and from a minimum height of 500 feet, drops the ball, attached to a parachute, to the nearest pit or hole, indicated by a red flag at the airport. He then lands his plane, finds his ball and proceeds as in every game of golf, to hit the ball into the hole with his golf clubs. This done, he tunes up his plane and flies to the next airport or tee #2 and repeats. Every player is required to carry a score-keeper. Radio waves high flyers, Washington, D.C., Oct. 1. Experiments conducted by H.W. Wellex at the radio station of the Carnegie Institution have proven that radio waves travel a distance of 80 miles heavenword before they are reflected back to earth. Traveling like lightning as they ascend in to the ionosphere the radio impulses have to be measured in 10,000ths of second to accurately check the height reached before they return to the radio set

Add automatic river gauge. After dialing the Potomac River Gauge, A.L. King, U.S. Weather Bureau observer, waits for the first buzz, then sets his stop watch which continues until the buzz signal is again heard then he stops the watch. The time interval between the two signals is converted into the gauge height by dividing the number of seconds in the interval by 30 as gauge height above a field zero point is represented 8/30 seconds for each vertical foot of water, 4/9/38

Members of Civil Aeronautics Authority inspect latest aid to airplane pilots. Washington, D.C., Oct. 10. An instrument which gives airplane pilots their height above the ground over which the plane is flying was demonstrated today to members of the Civil Aeronautics Authority by officials of the Western Electric Co. and the United Airlines. Claimed to be the first successful altimeter showing terrain clearance, the new device operates by radio, using the shortest wave ever employed for aviation, officials of the companies stated. In the photograph, left to right: Col. Sumter Smith, Peter C. Sandrette, Supt. of the United Airline's communication laboratory who was in charge of the demonstration; and Thomas Hardin. And fall. Washington, D.C., April 9. Weather Bureau observers stationed along the principal rivers of the United States soon will be able to follow the rise and fall of nearby river merely by picking up a telephone and dialing a given number. Preliminary trials for the last few months here show that a new automatic sound river gauge effectively and economically supplies the facts weathermen need in forecasting floods and supplying other information on river conditions for many interests. More weather bureau stations will install the new gages as fast as possible. (1)A river gauge on the Potomac River in the Capitol, where formerly a U.S. Weather Bureau Scientist had to go to this gauge box to take a reading on the river's height, all he has to do now is to pick up his telephone, dial the number of Potomac River, listen for a gong, then a buzz and at last another buzz, and then he will know whether the river is rising or falling, 4/9/38
