Wheeler hits sale of guns at peace rally. Washington, D.C., June 8. Condemnation of 'war hysteria' and defense policies was voiced last night by leaders of congressional, labor, student, and women's groups at an antiwar mass meeting. Over 1,100 persons attended. Senator Burton K. Wheeler, Democrat, of Montana, struck at Administration proposals to sell the Allies supplies of rifles, 75 millimeter guns and ammunition 'officially described as obsolete.' He further stated, ' I want to do everything to help the Allies stamp out the brutal forces which seek to dominate Europe and perhaps the rest of the world, but setting the United States on fire will not help cut out the fire in Europe'

New fathometer used at full speed. Washington, D.C., May 7. Dr. Herbert Grove Dorsey of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey has invented an instrument to secure the precise measurement. The machine sends a sound, pitched so high that it is above audibility, traveling thru the water a known speed, the sound hits the bottom and returns as an echo at 20 times per second. The fathometer is so accurate that a change in depth of three inches can be detected. the indications are made by a flash from a neon tube, viewed thru a rotating disc, the flash of light appearing to stand still and the depth is read as easily as a clock. The instrument indicator is installed in the pilot house (at the top of the machine) and the transceiver (the disc at the right of the machine [?]) is located in the hull of the ship, 5/7/1937

Bureau of Standards designs mechanical batter to determine liveliness of baseballs. Washington, D.C., Feb. 21. Using a newly designed apparatus, the U.S. Bureau of Standards today began experiments to determine the relative home-run qualities of American, National and International baseballs. In conducting the tests a scientist pulls the trigger of an air gun loaded with a wooden projectile representing the slugger's bat. The projectile strikes a baseball causing it to fly toward a ballistic pendulum. After each of such hits the scientist takes a reading on the pendulum. It tells him how hard the ball hit the pendulum, or whether it was a homerun, a double, [...]st a pop fly. Dr. H.L. Dryden, Chief [...]e Division of Mechanics and Sound, Designed the machine and is supervising the tests. He is [...] right while on the left is Edward B. Eynon, Secretary of the Washington Baseball Club, 2/21/38

Pettijohn, general counsel for the Hayes office, movieland's self-censoring group, was on of the first witnesses before the Senate Interstate Commerce Subcommittee which heard actor Robert Montgomery this morning. Gesturing wildly, he eloquently pleaded against passage of Senator Neely's bill to prohibit 'block booking' and 'blind selling', movie trade practices which remove theater owner's choice in selecting his movie bill. He offered to bring Walt Disney before the Committee to prove the disastrous effects of the bill if made law, saying that the biggest hits are seldom expected by either producers or theater managers. General Hollywood expert opinion was that 'Snow white and the Seven Dwarfs' would never sell, he said. 4-3-39
