One way to increase tire life--and to do your part in the saving of rubber for the forces of fighting to defend your right to drive in freedom over the roads of this democracy is to keep the pressure right. This driver isn't thinking of war, however, as he checks his tire pressure. He's just using common sense as he takes a few moments to make certain that costly carelessness will not rob him of tire mileage

Defense housing, Erie, Pennsylvania. Living conditions were so crowded in Erie, Pennsylvania, that a defense worker and his family of three were found to be living in this attic room. One of the defense industries there, which holds large contracts for the Navy, expects an increase of 4,000 workers during the coming year. Practically all vacancies are already taken, and even the contemplated construction of new homes will fill only a fraction of the need. Realizing the urgency of this need, the Division of Defense Housing has programmed 300 homes in this area, 60 of which are already completed (July 1941). In the meantime, trailers are being used by the Division as a temporary expedient until the more permanent homes are completed

The war has brought approximately a thirty-three percent increase in housing facilities in Bantam--an eighty-unit federally financed housing project about five minutes from the Warren McArthur factory. As the automobiles and tires of workers in Bantam's defense industries wear out, it is probable that additional new housing facilities will be needed

Bantam, Connecticut. Much of the food that is served in Bantam homes is bought at the local First National Store, part of New England's leading food chain. Manager Charley Dempsey, who admits that he sometimes takes off his hat when sleeping, hopes soon to get a larger store with a full line of meats, but is worried about the difficulty in getting meat cases. He's very pleased about the increase in his business, which has meant larger weekly checks for him, and has increased his staff from one boy part-time two years ago to three full-time and one part-time now. He looks for an even greater volume when the second forty units of the new housing project are completed. Charley, who was in the Army during the last war, and all his employees are natives of Bantam. The main difference rising food prices have meant to Bantam housewives, says Dempsey, is that whereas they used to order without bothering to ask the price, they now ask the price, then say what they want

World production of rubber. The increase in production of rubber between 1930 and 1940 parallels the growth of the automobile. In 1940 all but a few shiploads of the 1,000,000 long tons produced in the world came from Malaya, the Netherlands, the East Indies, Ceylon and other East Indian sources. The greatest part of this was shipped to the United States. Since the war, more than ninety-eight percent of our sources of supply of crude rubber have been lost

Conversion. Electric shaver plant. This worker in a New England plant that normally produces electric dry shavers is now busy turning out spring collets for machine tools to be used in war production. On this Norton type C six-inch semi-automatic cylindrical grinder, he used to turn out rotor shafts for the motor of the shaver. To convert his machine to the larger grinding job, it was necessary only to exchange the normal one-inch vitrified aluminum oxide wheel for a three-inch wheel and to increase the feed of the cooling solution. This worker was used to working to a tolerance of .0002 inches on the motor shafts so he finds it simple to attain the comparatively rough tolerance of .002 inches required on this war work.
