American Red Cross - Vehicles - American Red Cross in North Russia. Typicial street vehicle used by Red Cross officers as method of transportation in practically all their work about town, waiting for its Red Cross passenger outside Hotel Troitski. Carts are made very light in weight and the shafts are so attached that it is easy for horse to pull it out of swamp and mud. Harness allows horses great freedom of movement, and yet it can be easily and perfectly controlled by driver. Essential part of harness is enormous yoke. Horses are small but very tough and they are very well cared for

Ceremonies - Preparedness Day, Washington, D.C. - Marine veterans stage realistic battle in Philadelphia, PA. to stimulate recruiting. Two hundred United States Marines, veterans of the Nicaraguan, Haytian and Dominican campaigns, staged a sham battle in the very heart of Philadelphia, PA., to stimulate recruiting. Divided into defenders and attackers, the former using the ruins of the buildings which are being razed to make way for a park. The Marines Marines skirmishedfor two hours. The men were attired in field uniform loaded down with equipment, hauled field guns and light artillery as though the taking of the city depended upon their efforts. The battle was planned as part of the recruiting campaign of the Marine Corps. Photo shows Marines enroute to battle; Madeline McCadden bearing the standard. 1917

American Red Cross - Classes in Red Cross Work - England - Making splints for wounded soldiers. Corner of the Plastic room of the Surgical Appliances association in Mulberry Walk, Chelsea, where papier mache splints are made. Each splint is designed to fit the particular limb for which it is intended. A plaster cast is taken at the hospital of the injured limb (a cast of a badly deformed limb is seen in the background) and the splint is modelled on the cast in paier mache, which by the invention of one of the American women connected with the institution, has been rendered antiseptic and waterproof. The splints are cheap, durable, light, and very comfortable. All the surgical splints and similar apparatus for American soldiers in England have been made in London by this organization.
