Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAV7A1) or Amtracs are ground guided into their assigned positions on board the USS Anchorage (LSD-36) which can hold 12 AAVs in its enormous well deck. The AAVs would play a serious role in securing the beachhead during Exercise KERNEL BLITZ '97, held at Camp Pendleton, California. KERNEL BLITZ is a bi-annual Commander-in-CHIEF Pacific (CINCPAC) fleet training exercise (FLEETEX) focused on operational/tactical training of Commander, Third Fleet (C3F)/ I Marine Expeditionary Forces (MEF) and Commander, Amphibious Group 3 (CPG-3)/ 1ST Marine Division (MARDIV).
