Wash day on the Marne. Monday is a busy day on the river Marne when the housewives take their week's washing down to the laundry floats. Dozens of these floats which are anchored in mid-stream, have as their wash tubs the river itself. The laundress kneels and scrubs her cloths on a sort of concrete washboard built slanting into the river, behind her are racks on which she hangs the cloths until she has finished the wash, then she carries it to the bank and spreads the linen in the sun. These laundry floats may be seen all along the Marne through the devastated regions where the Junior Red Cross has its relief centers for the kiddies of the returning refugees
