Demountable employee housing. This brand new type of housing accommodation was developed through several intermediate steps and experiments in prefabrication, in answer to the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority's) need for housing for temporary use on construction projects in remote localities. The scheme permits fabrication at a distance from the job (about 600 miles in this instance), thus reducing dependence on overtaxed accommodations at the construction project. After completion of the project, the demountable housing is quickly removed elsewhere. Some of the earlier TVA demountables have been moved three times from project to project. The design shown here is particularly light in weight due to full use of the recently developed stressed-skin system of plywood construction. It is built largely of weatherproof plywood. The large bay across the front greatly enhances the size of the living room. The trailer houses, on the basis of experience to date, are entirely competitive in cost with traditionally constructed housing of the same floor area. On account of being constructed in shops rather than in the field, they are produced with much closer tolerances, considerably better finish, and with equipment designed and constructed with greater detail and superior utilization of space

Hiwassee Dam and powerhouse. This plant is in a remote location and has relatively few visitors. The reception is correspondingly small. Its scheme of lighting may be noted. The round holes in the ceiling conceal "downlight" units which concentrate strong direct light on persons and objects from invisible sources. Background lighting is supplied from tubular units laid in coves along two sides of the room which throw light chiefly on the upper part of the walls and the light colored portion of the ceiling. Visible light fixtures are combined with air conditioning outlets and are decorative only. A large window along the left side of the room permits observation of the control room

He is giving Congress a week from Monday to perfect a plan. If Congress falls down, Cowboy Gassaway is going to work on a multi-ramified program which in general specifies the return of the horse and fewer automobiles. In one hour his week on a D.C. street is counted 1800 cars. "That's whats wrong!" he suggests. People will buy a gallon of gas when they have no "bread" or likker in the house." New uniform for U.S. Treasury guards. Washington, D.C., Aug. 26. Neat but not gaudy is the scheme of the new uniform of the U.S. Treasury guards. Blue shirt, blue uniform trousers with Sam Browne belt replaces the odd trousers and shirts of many colors formerly worn by the guards while on duty. A neat cap, patterned after the ones worn by the New York Coppers, tops off the new outfit. Furnishing the men with new standard uniforms is the first step taken by the U.S. Secret Service since they were given supervision of the guards. Harold nelson, a Treasury Guard for three years, is displaying the uniform in this picture, 8/26/37
