After a simulated fire on a C-130 aircraft on the flight line, AIRMAN 1ST Class Camby P. Gallagher of the 21st Medical Squadron uses the proper procedures when treating the victim of smoke inhalation. They were participating in the 21st Space Wing's Operational Readiness Inspection that was conducted at Cheyenne Mountain Air Station and Peterson AFB, Colo., 13 to 17 February 1996. In August 1996, US Air Force SENIOR MASTER Sergeant Porfirio Castillo investigated smoke swirling in the distance as he sat in his vehicle waiting for a train to complete its passing. When he arrive at the site of the fire he went into a blazing house to save an elderly man that was suspected to still be inside. SMSGT Castillo risked his life by entering the house that was almost totally in flames. He pulled the man to saftey while the house was collasping around him. Despite SMSGT Castillo's efforts, the man, suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation, died several hours later. For his actions, Castillo received the AIRMAN's Medal and the 1997 Pitsenbarger Award. This image was ...
