Airplane seat production. See the "V" on the airplane pilot seat? It's the Victory elastic cord which provides the stress needed to counter-balance the pilot's weight during vertical adjustment of the seat. An inspector employed by a large Midwest rubber company now converted to production of war essentials, operates the vertical adjustment release lever which allows movement of the seat while plane is in motion

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. By using a polarized light apparatus to take pictures of plastic models of turbine nuts and bolts, Dr. Hetenyi, Hungarian-born research engineer at the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, has discovered how to make this fastening device up to forty per cent stronger. He found that nuts and bolts with broad shoulders and tapered bodies distribute stress on threads more evenly than do ordinary nuts and bolts

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Repair work to space shuttle Discovery's external fuel tank begins in the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Technicians will modify 32 support beams, called stringers, on the tank's intertank region by fitting pieces of metal, called radius blocks, over the stringers' edges where they attach to the thrust panel area. The thrust panel is where the tank meets the two solid rocket boosters and sees the most stress during the flight into orbit. After the modifications and additional scans of the stringers are complete, foam insulation will be re-applied. Discovery's next launch opportunity to the International Space Station on the STS-133 mission is no earlier than Feb. 3, 2011. N-243 Flight and Guidance Centrifuge: Is used for spacecraft mission simulations and is adaptable to two configurations. Configuration 1: The cab will accommodate a three-man crew for space mission research. The accelerations and rates are intended to be smoothly applicable at very low value so the navigation and guidance procedures using a high-accuracy, out-the window display may be simulated. Configuration 2: The simulator can use a one-man cab for human tolerance studies and performance testing. Atmosphere and tempertaure can be varied as stress inducements. This simlator is operated closed-loop with digital or analog computation. It is currently man-rated for 3.5g maximum. ARC-1971-AC71-6490
