[Hurricane Katrina/Hurricane Rita] Baton Rouge, LA, October 1, 2005 -- Travel trailers in one section of a staging area are placed 12 wide by 36 deep, producing a sea of 432 trailers waiting for final inspection and documentation before they are used to house people left homeless by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. FEMA will place tens of thousands of these units and mobile homes throughout the state in commercial parks, on industrial and private property and in group sites being constructed by the agency. Milky way - This image of the center of our galaxy was produced from observtons made by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). The infrared telescope carried by IRAS sees through the dust and gas that obscures stars and other objects when viewed by optical telescopes. The bulge in the band is the center of the galaxy. The knots and blobs scattered along the band are giant clouds of interstellar gas and dust heated by nearby stars. Some are wrmed by newly formed stars in the surrounding cloud and some are heated by nearby massive, hot, blue stars tens of thousands of times brighter than our Sun. ARC-1983-A83-0768-1

The bright cirrus-like clouds of Neptune change rapidly, often forming and dissipation over periods of several to tens of hours. In this sequence spanning two rotations of Neptune (about 36 hours) Voyager 2 observed cloud evolution in the region around the Great Dark Spot (GDS) at an effective resolution of about 100 km (62 miles) per pixel. The surprisingly rapid changes which occur over the 18 hours separating each panel shows that in this region Neptune's weather is perhaps as dynamic and variable as that of the Earth. However, the scale is immense by our standards--the Earth and the GDS are of similar size -- and in Neptune's frigid atmosphere, where temperatures are as low as 55 degree Kelvin (-360F), the cirrus clouds are composed of frozen methane rather than Earth's crystalse of water ice.
