Making willow plumes under unsanitary conditions. A dirty home, the father and several friends had been rushing the growler and booze was literally flowing around over table and floor. The father is a truck-driver out of work. The mother, Freddie (11yrs. old) and Antoinette (8 yrs. old) all work $1.50 to $2.00 a week now, "but we make $3.00 a week in summer when we can work all day and not go to school." Vincent Tranutolo, 309 E. 110th St., ground floor. Location: New York, New York (State)

Mud Huts for Homes. A scene today in the old war zone of Roumania. From the ruins of the battlefields, the Roumanians have constructed these shelters from mud. Many are built on the old trench dugouts, the inhabitants living underground. Some of the huts shelter as many as five families. It was in this district that the American Red Cross doctors and nurses found much disease. The unsanitary conditions were a constant source of epidemics

Three related drought refugee families stalled on the highway near Lordsburg, New Mexico. From farms near Claremore, Oklahoma. Have been working as migratory workers in Calfornia and Arizona, now trying to get to Roswell, New Mexico, for work chopping cotton. Have car trouble and pulled up alongside the highway. "Would go back to Oklahoma but can't get along there. Can't feed the kids on what they give you (relief budget) and ain't made a crop there you might say for five years. Only other work there is fifty cents a day wages and the farmers can't pay it anyways." One of these families has lost two babies since they left their home in Oklahoma. The children, seventeen months and three years, died in the county hospital at Shafter California, from typhoid fever, resulting from unsanitary conditions in a labor camp
