Dimare, from the Rescue and Salvage Ship USS SAFEGUARD (ARS 50), inspect their diving gear and test communications prior to entering the water on Oct. 10, 2006, to survey two U.S. Douglas Torpedo Bomber Devastators lost here in World War II. Divers and other crewmembers from SAFEGUARD assisted the Naval Historical Center and The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery in a scientific survey of the two submerged World War II aircraft in order to provide information for possible salvage in the future. The ORISKANY will be towed 22-miles south of Pensacola in approximately 212-ft. of water where it will become the largest ship ever intentionally sunk as an artificial reef.
