Blind youngsters display ability before Senate Committee. Washington, D.C. April 9. Blind children from the Maryland School for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind coaching Senator Claude Pepper, of Florida, in the art of operating a braille typewriter. The youngsters appeared before the senate subcommittee on education and labor, of which Senator Pepper is Chairman, as an example of what can be done for physically handicapped children if a bill sponsored by the International Society of Crippled Children is passed. The bill provides for the education of all types of physically handicapped children. It appropriates $1,158,000, of which $2,080,000 is an outright grant ($40,000 to each state), and $9,000,000 for matching; and $500,000 for administration of the act by the U.S. Office of Education. All these boys are cutters in the Seacoast Canning Co., Factory #7. Ages range from 7 to 12. They live near the factory. Seven year old boy in front, Byron Hamilton, has a badly cut finger, but helps his brother regularly. Behind him is his brother, George, 11 years. He cut his finger half off while working. They and many other youngsters said they were always cutting their fingers. (See photo #2435 and label.) George earns $1.00 some days, $.75 usually. Some of the others said they earn $1.00 when they work all day. At times they start at 7 a.m., work all day and until midnight, but the work is very irregular. Names of those in photo are George Mathews, Johnny Rust, John Surles[?], Fulsom McCutchin (11 yrs.), Albert Robinson, Morris McConnell.  Location: Eastport, Maine.

The boy next to him was dragged out of the photograph against his will soon after by an anxious parent. Superintendent was very suspicious and accused me of being the one who made so much trouble for the mill people several years ago. He finally permitted some outside photographs only saying, "We have certificates for all these children."  Location: [Cowpens], South Carolina.

For the Sins of Their Fathers. When the German and Austrian armies of occupation evacuated Albania, they left behind quite a few illegitimate children. These unfortunate youngsters were looked upon as outcasts by the stern moral people of the country. Many were homeless and had no one to care for them. But when the American Red Cross came to the relief of the country, all this was changed. The Americans established an orphanage and school for these little outcasts, and now the youngsters who were forbidden to play with these children look on with envy as they see the care they are receiving.
