Cup to winner of marathon. Washington, D.C. June 12. Winner of the sixth annual Evening Star Marathon for the National A.A.U. Championship today, Mel Porter of the Millrose A.A. of New York is presented with a bronze trophy by Dr. Leo S. Rowe, Director of the Pan-American Union. A field of the fastest marathon runners in the western hemisphere participated in the race which started at Mt. Vernon, Virginia and finished at the zero milestone in Potomac Park. Porters time for the distance was 2 hours and 43 minutes.

Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center. Members of Team Martinsburg prepare a litter to carry a casualty after a simulated base attack. The annual TOP DOLLAR competition at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, Michigan, brings together finance personnel from four Air National Guard bases from around the United States. Teams must operate in simulated forward-deployed area, and be prepared to react to possible hostile attacks at any time. The winning team receives a trophy to take back to their home station

Cotton state Solons present demands for enactment of farm program to president. Washington, D.C., Aug 5. Led by Senator Ellison D. "Cotton Ed" Smith, of South Carolina, a delegation of congressmen from the cotton states called on President Roosevelt today and presented their demands for enactment of a farm program before congressional adjournment. After the conference a spokesman for the group told reporters he felt the president would make stabilization loans under existing discretionary powers, probably through the Commodity Credit Corporation, on all basic commodities if given "definite assurances" that a farm production control program would be enacted early next session.
