The Hamilton was built in 1900 as a three-story building, a tornado in 1906 destroyed its overhanging balconies. In 1923 an additional nine floors were constructed. In 2002, the hotel won an "Excellence in Historic Preservation" award from the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, following an extensive renovation.
