In November 1863, Union and Confederate forces fought for control of Chattanooga, Tennessee, a railroad hub known as the "Gateway to the Deep South." The Confederates had been victorious two months earlier at nearby Chickamauga, Georgia, in September, however, Union troops prevailed at Chickamauga.
