is built specially todraw a light express train at a great speed over alevel tract of country; a second has to pull asimilar train up long and severe gradients ; whilea third has to haul a long suburban train withevery seat occupied, stopping at many stations andrequiring to get up speed as soon as the guardblows his whistle. On the other hand, a goodsengine must be a very giant in haulage, but speedneed not necessarily enter into calculation. Passekger Locomotives (Plates IV and V) Passenger train engines have larger wheels thanthose engaged in goods traffic; the former mayhave one pair of driving wheels or two pairscoupled together, whereas the goods engine willprobably have three or four pairs of same-sizedwheels aU coupled. The small goods-engine wheelsrevolve more quickly at any given speed, and thecylinders can apply fresh power more frequently;but the larger the diameter of the wheels, once theinitial effort of starting has been overcome, theeasier it is to attain high speeds.
