Hurricane/Tropical Storm - Plaquemines Parish, La. , August 29, 2008 -- A 25 foot storm surge from Hurricane Katrina wiped out the original Plaquemines Parish detention center and Sheriff's offices. It was a single story, 800-bed structure. It was declared 98% destroyed, making it eligible for replacement funding under FEMA's Public Assistance program. The new detention center is being built back on the same 70-acre original site and will have the same inmate holding capacity, but is being built 18 feet above the ground. This is being done to meet the elevation standards required by the new Digital Flood Information Rating Maps. Photo by FEMA/Manuel Broussard.
