MAJ James MacMillan, a veterinarian with Madigan Army Medical Center, Fort Lewis, Washington, places kennels with small pets on a truck en route to a holding area, where they will be examined and returned to their owners. McChord is a stopover, during Operation Fiery Vigil, for hundreds of U.S. Air Force and Navy personnel, civilian employees and their dependents and pets being evacuated from the Philippines after fallen ash from the eruption of Mount Pinatubo collapsed buildings and disrupted operations on military bases.
