description

Summary

Kalaupapa and Kalawao Settlements, Kalaupapa National Historical Park. Mother Marianne Cope was one of the historical figures who devoted herself to service in Kalaupapa, assisting the afflicted and restoring dignity to individuals who were shunned by most of society. With the contributions and support of Mother Marianne and others, the isolated settlement was eventually able to provide most of the amenities of normal society.

Mother Marianne and a small contingent of Franciscan Sisters of Charity arrived in 1888 to administer the Charles R. Bishop Home for Girls. She also managed a boy's orphanage at Kalawao, an effort she shared with Father Damien and Brother Joseph Dutton. This monument is now located on the Bishop Home grounds along Puahi Street.
