Mother Marianne Monument - National Parks Gallery
Summary
Kalaupapa and Kalawao Settlements, Kalaupapa National Historical Park. After the passing of Mother Marianne Cope in 1918, the Sisters of St. Francis and patients took a collection to purchase the construction of a memorial. Built of concrete, it features Christ the Savior coming down from the Cross to embrace St. Francis of Assisi and reads “In memory of Reverend Marianne… erected by the people of the Settlement.” Today, people from all over the world make pilgrimage to the site and leave offerings of lei, rosary beads, and flowers.
