Mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus), Glacier National Park, 2014.
Summary
The scientific name Oreamnos is derived from 'oros' meaning 'mountain' and 'amnos' meaning 'lamb'. Also called the 'Rocky Mountain goat', this large hoofed mammal is common to subapine and alpine biotic zones. Despite being called a mountain goat, it's not actually in the same genus (Capra) as all other animals called goats. As an even-toed ungulate, it belongs to the order Artiodactyla (as opposed to the odd-toed ungulates which belong to Perissodactyla) and the family Bovidae, along with antelopes, gazelles and cattle.
