Farm, or to any other charitable societywhich will agree to give them proper care.This act was suggested by a New YorkState law, which, however, applies to thefire department horses of New York Cityonly. The Red Acre Farm Association alsoprovides care and treatment for disabledhorses, whose owners cannot afford to payfor their keeping, or can pay but a smallsum; it makes a practice of rescuing oldand incurably lame or diseased horses, upon the horse, and who live by cheatingpoor and ignorant men. Their system isas follows: One of them buys for a triflea horse afflicted with lameness, the heaves,or other trouble. He applies some power-ful and often excruciatingly painful treat-ment, such as pouring lead shot down ahorses throat to hide the symptoms ofheaves, which has the effect of concealingthe defect for a few hours, and the horseis sold, perhaps for fifty dollars, and istaken home by his new owner. Helping the Work Horses •73 day. when the horse has proved to beworthless, and is in great misery from thereaction of the drug or treatment admin-istered to him, another dealer, who is in theconspiracy, comes along, buys the horsefor a few dollars, and sells him again to anew customer after another course of treat-ment, and so it goes on until the wretchedanimal expires. Half a dozen dealers canmake a living in this manner out of a com-paratively small number of horses. A wave of indignation would be arousedif the extent of the traffic in poor oldhorses were realized. The Boston Tran-script says: There is a large traffic in broken-down, worn-out, diseased and suffering horses, and jockeysof the most degraded character make a pre-carious, living from it. Recently, in one day, atLowell, fourteen horses were sold by auction,the highest price for any one of them being tendollars.
