Rock wall and St. Francis Church
Summary
Kalaupapa and Kalawao Settlements, Kalaupapa National Historical Park. Spirituality was an important aspect of life at Kalaupapa, reflected in the various churches at the settlements. The contemporary Catholic congregation worshiped at St. Francis Church, an Italian Gothic-style structure rebuilt in 1908 after a fire two years earlier. The use of reinforced concrete for such a structure was in the early stages of development, so it is notable that this architectural example exists in such a remote community.
