In regard to age, the bone lesions areusually observed in persons with a historyof smallpox during early childhood, but thedeformity may follow variola contractedat any time before the complete ossifica-tion of the bones. The greatest age atwhich such a complication of variola hasbeen observed was fourteen years, in a boy. The fact that practically no mention ofbone-deforming lesions as a complication ofvariola is found in current literature shouldmake one \ery cautious not to interpretcoincidence as cause and effect. The tactthat the masses of the Filipino people areundernourished and underdeveloped as aresult of starvation and metabolism incon-gruities adds to the difilculty of definiteconclusions in interpreting the etiology ofchronic bone-deforming lesions contractedduring childhood.
