White springtail (Collembola) eating fungi, Oregon Caves National Monument & Preserve, 2016.
Summary
Collembolans are omnivorous and free-living, prefering moist conditions. Unsurprisingly, the high humidity of many caves favor springtails and other cave-adapted species. Springtails are primarily detritovores (i.e., obtaining nutrients by consuming decomposing plant and animal parts) which makes them one of the main biological agents responsible for the control and dissemination of soil microorganisms.
