Illustration of Plato's idea that only those that are good can be gods; poets having written fictions dishonourable to the goodness of gods have to be banished (poets reading and being banished); good and bad gods: Titus Latinius, a Roman peasant, lost his son and fell
seriously ill as punishment for failing to inform the senate to restart the games ('Ludi Magni' in honour of Jupiter) as commanded in a dream (Titus Latinius or his son lying in bed; sacrifice of animals in honour of the gods)

Men Who Popularized Pajamas in Balkans. Lieut. L.N. Tuckerman of Boston is the smallest officer in the Montenegrin Commission of the American Red Cross but he originated one very big idea, that of putting Red Cross pajamas to use as trousers for the Moslem women, and this idea enabled the Red Cross to largely increase its relief work in the Balkans at the time when every ounce of effort counted. He is shown here with his back to the camera at a distribution of second hand clothing in Montenegro, wondering how his scant supplies can be made to do for such a large number of deserving people. It was on this occasion that he was struck with the Great Idea, and for with took over for external clothing purposes the large stock of pajamas which nobody in the Balkans could be persuaded to use for night garments

The thatched roofs, often without any ceiling between the roofs and the floor are alive with rats and insects of all kinds. Visiting nurses called and taught the people new ideas of home cleanliness and care of children while modern hospitals took care of the hundreds of sick that formerly had died in such homes for want of proper care and attention

Uncle Sam spending $3,000,000 to make one map. Washington D.C. July 28. A huge photographic map which when completed will have cost $3,000,000, is being put together by the Agriculture Adjustment Administration, Department of Agriculture, in Washington. Approximately one-thrid of the entire land surface of the United States is being photographed from the air from a distance of three to five miles up. The idea behind this gigantic job is to determine compliance in the Agricultural Conservation Program, plan soil conservation or Public Works projects, lay out roads, forests and public parks, drainage ditches, dams and lakes and also to seek to improve National Defense. (1) C.E. Kowalczyk, AAA worker, is shown making a stereoscopic examination of the finished photographic prints to determine the relief or elevation of land surface. 7/28/37

Flat black paint is best but if you put enough coats of any color on, it will keep the light from coming through. It is also well (and not shown in this picture) to use cardboard to shade the light and keep it from shining directly on the windows; the kind of cardboard that comes in shirts from the laundry is light-proof, but a little heavier kind will keep the glass splinters from flying if there is a nearby burst

Air raid protection--what to do in your home. This is not the most comfortable place in the world for a refuge, but it has its points. In case of damage to the house, the occupants could get out either through the window at the left or the door at the right. The cellar ceiling is extra braced with iron poles. There is a water supply handy. Take along plenty of magazines, games and other things to help pass the time. A radio is a good idea. Flashlights will be mighty handy if the power goes off. We recommend, however, that this family get a little more out of line from the windows

Civilian protection. It looks like a good idea to this young man, who is about to enter the firehouse and sign up to aid in the defense of his home in case of enemy attack. He hopes his training will be needed, but he would rather be trained unnecessarily than untrained in the event of disaster

Somewhere in Central Africa. No, children, that is not one of those model planes you made for spotters to practice on, or aerial gunners to shoot down with BBs. This is the African version, complete with flags, of the Royal Air Force consolidated-built Liberator bomber as adapted for ju-ju dancing. The natives who work at Allied airports in the jungles evolved the idea, which is nothing if not original in the annals of ju-ju

Along the well-lighted length of the "MacArthur Boulevard" in a large Western aircraft plant are the assembly lines from which a steady stream of Ventura bombers is pouring. Production. Aircraft. George "Randy" McCraw decorating a Vega Ventura bomber. Every ship that rolls off the line carries a cartoon aimed at the Axis. George came to work as a spray painter, then shifted to painting British insignia on sides of ships. He sometimes amused his fellow workers by drawing faces on ships during lunch hour, and was prevailed upon to put a big drawing on a ship for a special occasion. The idea took, and now George puts a gag drawing on each ship. The paint washes off with gasoline, but overseas gossip says these ships go into combat still bearing assorted Rudy Ostriches, Donald Ducks, Porky Pigs and a host of other cartoon characters

Production. Milling machines and machine castings. A view of the manufacturing area of a large machine tool plant. The finished parts and sub-assemblies stacked in the foreground give some idea of the complexity of machine tools. When Archbishop Francis J. Spellman handed a diploma to George J. De Land pool. Carr's Machine Shop. Nothing makes W.E. Mansfield so mad as the idea that Florida shops cannot do fine precision work. He should know, for he's doing it in a member shop of the De Land pool. He worked on weapons and ammunition for the Winchester Arms Company for twenty years and thought he was retiring when he came to Florida. Now seventy-one, he's turning out delicate precision parts for essential war equipment

De Land pool. Bits and parts. With a "know-how" skill developed in thirty-two years experience as a machinist, Fred W. Casey, sub-contractor in the De Land, Florida pool, bends over a heavy lathe as it machines a part for the nation's war machine. Fifty-two-year-old Casey, like many machinists who retired to Florida, chuckles at the idea that machinists in the deep South cannot work to close tolerances

Health measures for low home temperatures. Junior will have to become accustomed to lower temperatures this winter so it's a good idea to give him a physical checkup before cold winds start to howl.
