Independent union member tells of NLRB's refusal to certify gas workers' organization. Washington, D.C., July 5. Joseph C. Nash, member of the Independent Gas Workers' Union, organized at the Brooklyn Union Gas Co. in New York, described today to the Senate Education and Labor Committee the attempts of his organization to obtain certification from the NLRB, although a petition for certification was filed over a year ago. The board's refusal to grant the petition, he said, could be blamed upon its 'pro- C.I.O. bias.' Senator Allen Ellender read into the record a letter from the union's attorney stating that Nash did not speak for the union, but represented solely himself

California labor relationist charges AF of L fostered labor disturbances to discredit Wagner Act. Washington, D.C., May 9. George C. Kidwell, Director of the California State Department of Industrial Relations, charged today before the Senate Education and Labor Committee that the AF of L had deliberately fostered labor disturbances to discredit the Wagner Act. He said that in Westwood, a California lumber town, CIO members had been driven out by company agents and that in two weeks there was not a member of any union in town. 'In the face of this fact, it is the Labor Board that is charged with thwarting the 'democratic rights of the workers,'' he said

Auto manufacturers send representative to tell of Labor Act's 'glaring weaknesses.' Washington, D.C., June 27. The automobile manufacturers' associations, represented by William J. Cronin, its secretary, told the Senate Education and Labor Committee that the present Wagner Labor Act is surrounded by 'glaring weaknesses.' Reviewing sit-down strikes, he said that General Motors plants had alone had 40,000 workers idle and had a payroll reduction of more than $10,000,000 as a result of sit-down strikes. He recommended amendments to allow workers to choose bargaining agents without interference, and a clause to make both parties of agreements equally liable for violation. He is shown here pointing out enlarged clippings from the Detroit news which reproduced enlarged 'mugs' from police files to show certain leaders of automobile labor to have criminal records
