The storm surge washed out much of the dunes throughout the park. Only one pole now prevents this overlook from falling. The other three are suspended in the air.

Hurricane/Tropical Storm - Plaquemines Parish, La. , May 30, 2008 -- A 15ft. storm surge and 9ft. residual floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina damaged the interior of the building. Winds from the hurricane caused the water tower located next the auditorium to collapse and destroyed the entire roof as well as the interior of the auditorium. A 12-foot high storm surge swept debris into the meeting room, contaminated masonry walls and damaged wood floors, metal doors, windows and blinds.
