Possible key metal monopoly committee's study. Washington, D.C., May 8. The temporary National Economic Committee turned its investigation today upon the little known beryllium industry. Senator Joseph O'Mahoney, Co-chairman of the Committee, is shown here with Andrew Gahagan, President of the Beryllium Corp., of Temple, Pennsylvania, examining the crude ore and a sample hammer which is made from an alloy with beryllium. Gahagan described beryllium as an element, fourth in atomic weight from hydrogen, which can be combined with copper or nickel and certain other metals, to produce alloys of extraordinary hardness, lightness, and strength. The committee suspects that the metal may become a key material in industrial and war supply problems

The air raid protective services. The speedy laying and coupling of firehose is often a difficult task, but it is essential if the auxiliary firemen are to function to the best advantage. They must learn to clamber like monkeys over debris, and must learn to estimate the strength of standing sections of bombed buildings

Conversion. Beverage containers to aviation oxygen cylinders. Before completion of the fourth and final welding operation in the manufacture of shatterproof oxygen cylinders for high altitude flying, all straps are subjected to physical tests to determine the strength of the weld. Occasional radiographic inspections are made to insure the quality of workmanship after the two halves of the cylinder are brought together in this atomic welding machine and made one unit. Here, the operator has just completed the union and is about to remove the whole cylinder. Firestone, Akron, Ohio

Production. War housing trailers. Paper replaces steel as material for rounded corners of house trailer tops. These corners, made of successive layers of paper impregnated with a special hardening solution, have great structural strength and are light in weight. Easy installation is another valuable feature of the material as used in the making of war housing trailers at the Los Angeles plant of Western Trailer Company

A poster comes to life. Squinting against the terrific glare and bursts of steam charging up from a strip of red-hot steel which moves slowly past them, Sergeant Vineyard and Chief Evans pause with welder Woolslayer to watch precious river, which comes off the blooming mill and rolls toward the four-high strip mill at Allegheny-Ludlum. They're learning a lot, these servicemen of the "Men Working Together" poster, learning how their lives depend on the production workers of the country, without whose skill and strength the weapons of war could not be forged. Salvage. Wool reclamation. Layers of reclaimed wool and virgin wool are blended in an Eastern wool-reclamation plant. Here wools of different colors are laid in layers of the same thickness before being fed into a mixing picker. Experimentation and improved processing permit the use of up to eighty-five percent of reclaimed wool in new cloths, which, in quality and strength, compares favorably with virgin wool fabric

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. Many parts and products used by the Army and the Navy must stand up under severe service conditions. Here the strength of a specimen of brass is being determined. The results of these tests enables engineers to select metals that have the strength and stiffness needed for various machined parts for guns and equipment. This testing machine records the tensile of yield strength of a metal specimen--its resistance to being pulled apart. A specimen in the machine is pulled until it breaks, and the load necessary to break is recorded. A meter attached to the specimen measures the amount of stretching. Conservation. Wooden manhole covers. Strength of the wooden manhole covers installed in Los Angeles County, California, is pointed out to Colonel Carl H. Reeves, superintendent of the Los Angeles County, California, Maintenance Department, by Alfred Jones, county surveyor. Treated to resist termites and decay, each wooden cover saves 500 pounds of metal. It may be manufactured without the use of extensive fabricating equipment. A War Production Board (WPB) order prohibits the use of iron and steel for manhole covers

Fiberglass manufacture, Owens-Corning, Toledo, Ohio. A warp beam of fine fiberglass yarns being put into a loom preparatory to weaving all-glass fabrics used to make electrical insulation, pipe lagging for naval vessels, and industrial service fabrics where high tensile strength, resistance to corrosive vapors, and non-inflammability help improve performance, save weight, and add dependability to vital equipment. Uses and applications of fiberglass materials are covered by many Federal, Army, Navy and Maritime Commission specifications

Conversion. Beverage containers to aviation oxygen cylinders. With the outside and inside of non-shatterable oxygen cylinder for high altitude flying complete, several rigorous tests are applied to guarantee safety. Every cylinder off the production line of the metal division of a large Eastern rubber factory is hydrostatically tested at 800 pounds pressure, twice the pressure maintained in the cylinder under normal use, to test the strength of the welding. It is then given air test at 400 pounds pressure as shown above. Here, an attendant is placing a cylinder into a steel compartment filled with water before the pressure is applied. By means of a hand crank, the inspector rotates at all points. Firestone, Akron, Ohio
