Washington man sleeps in a blanketless bed. Milton Fairchild of Washington, D.C., does not need any blankets for keeping him warm these winter nights. He has invented an electrical bed which does not require any covering for the body when asleep. Furthermore, according to Mr Fairchild, an "electric blanket" is healthier and one is not so susceptible to colds. The temperature is maintained constant throughout the night by automatic controls

Government scientist cools water to -6ʺ without freezing it. Washington, D.C., Aug. 9. The belief that water freezes at 32 degrees fahrenheit has been blasted by Dr. N. Ernest Dorsey, scientist of the National Bureau of Standards. Neither does all water freeze at the same temperature. These discoveries have been made by Dr. Dorsey after experimenting with 37 specimens of water taken from lakes, canals, and other sources. He has cooled water until it was minus 6 degrees fahrenheit that is, 38 degrees colder that the so called freezing point of 32 degrees. Yet it remained liquid, 8/9/38

New radio meteorograph developed for the U.S. Navy. Washington, D.C., June 9. The National Bureau of Standards has recently developed for the U.S. Navy Meteorological Service a new radio meteorograph. The new instrument (shown in the picture) is sent up on a 5-Foot balloon and is expected to replace the use of airplanes in upper-air meteorological surroundings. E.G. Lapham, Associate Physicist of the bureau, is shown assembling the new meteorograph in preperation for an ascent. The device transmits audio notes which are a function of temperature and humidity. These notes are interrupted at approximately each 10-millibar increment in pressure, thus identifying each temperature and humidity indication with its respective increment of altitude, 6937

Flame propogation in gas engines photographed. Washington, D.C., Aug. 26. A study of the mechanism of the flame propogation in the cylinder of a internal combustion engine is being made at the U.S. Bureau of Standards for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. A secial bomb made of steel, shown in the foreground, and designed to withstand pressures up to 500 lbs. to the square inch is used to show the progress of the flame and the rise in pressure which may be recorded photographically during the gas explosions under carefully controlled conditions. The camera, where the recordings are made, is in front of Dr. Ernest F. Flock of the Bureau of Standards, carries its film on a drum which may be revolved up to 4,000 revolutions per minute, this camera also records a neon light flashing at a thousandth of a second. The independent effects of pressure, temperature and charge composition upon flame speed and explosion ratio may be made with this equipment, 8/26/37

Brickwedge, of the Bureau of Standards, have just concluded experiments which have proved that an electric current, cut off from its original source, will flow eternally round and round a coiled tin wire circuit when the wire is subjected to 450-degree-below-zero temperature. The tests were made in a new effort to understand what electricity really is, 3/10/38

Rubber reclamation. Reclaiming rubber from scrap tires. An attendant at a large Midwest xylos process plant checks temperature on a continuous belt dryer which removes every trace of water. Recovery of rubber from old casings is based on dissolving and washing away all tire fibers and processing the resultant rubber material. Firestone

Closing the cover of the mold. Entirely automatic, the "watch-case" mold is closed by pushing a button, which starts several operations. First the airbag is filled with live steam which circulates during the entire process; next an automatic timer sets itself for the proper length of time and temperature; next pressure is exerted to squeeze the tire into the mold pattern. Putting tire into curing mold. From the vacuum expander, the potential new truck tire is taken to this "watch-case" curing mold in which it is baked under high heat and pressure for a long time. The exact time and temperature varies with the type and size of tire. The airbag inside the carcass is filled with live steam during this process so that heat is added from both inside and out. The mold contains the tread pattern, or design, as well as all markings which will appear on sidewall. Under this heat and pressure the rubber turns semi-liquid, and flows into every crevice, completely bonding the rubber processed fabric carcass to the cushion, the cushion to the tread. After this operation it is now one unit--a complete tire. Firestone (General) Tires, Akron, Ohio

Science and research. Studies of non-coking coals. Research workers at the Golden, Colorado field station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines at a fifty-pound coke oven, which is used to determine if an unknown coal has coking properties. Coal is tested at various temperature levels to determine its adaptability to coking. Left to right: Ralph Maugham, labor foreman; William Landers, assistant chemical engineer; V.F. Parry, supervising engineer. Mr. Landers is shown using an instrument which measures temperature by the color of the heated mass. The bureau is carrying on a project to determine the suitability of western coal for coke operations with the view to supplying war needs of the expanding iron and steel industry of the Western states

Production. Milling machines and machine castings. Precision gears are essential for machine tools to ensure accurate, smooth, quiet operations and long life. This gear grinder -- itself a machine tool -- is perfecting the working surfaces between the teeth of a milling machine gear. The milky liquid is coolant used to control the temperature at the grinding point so that the delicate physical character of the metal, produced by predetermined and careful heat treating, will not be disturbed. Location: a large Midwest machine tool plant
