Summary

Image reproduced in John Kemble's book, "San Francisco Bay: A Pictorial Maritime History," p. 78, with the following information: "CENTENNIAL passing Telegraph Hill....built appropriately in 1876, which plied the rivers for nearly twenty years. The picture shows her approaching her San Francisco wharf with sacked grain or rice on her foredeck and visible through the side port. In the background, the Castle, a restaurant and resort built on top of Telegraph Hill in 1882, can be seen at the right. To the left of it, and on slightly higher ground, is the time ball which was dropped at noon daily so that ships in the bay could check their chronometers. Below, on the waterfront, Fishermen's Wharf, then at the foot of Union Street, may be seen at the far left. The brick warehouse at the right was still standing in 1957, although it was no longer on the waterfront. (Courtesy Society of California Pioneers.)"
