The cottagers were wonderful in their unbounded hospitality, putting their all at the disposal of the RC. Improved "Marmite" in Vienna. In Vienna, where 150,000 people are fed daily in public kitchens, on food sent from America, they have developed an improved vacuum can for hauling hot food to the feeding stations. It is possible to cart a load of soup clear across the great city and then serve it piping hot, several hours after it has left the kettles of the central kitchens. These boys are hauling one of the improved food carriers on their little wago. The food is being taken, in this casee, to a gang of laborers in the railroad yard, who were unloading American Red Cross supplies. By its shipments of hospital supplies the Red Cross has enabled a dozen hospitals to remain open for the treatment of sick women and children

Ways of the East. Although Constantinople is one of the busiest ports in the world with vessels from every country calling at her harbor, there are none of the modern conveniences for handling freight or passengers to be found. Practically all boats must be unloaded by means if lighters for there are no large docks. Boat hoists do their own work. This picture shows American Red Cross supplies bound for south Russia being transferred from the American steamer to lighters in the harbor of the Turkish capital

Where west helps east. Thousands of tons of American Red Cross supplies for the help of Russian refugees and the destitute people of the Balkan countries pass through this warehouse in Constantinople. It is the base of all relief operations in that part of the world. The building has a capacity of nearly 10,000 tons and is one of the finest on the waterfront. Unlike most warehouses in Constantinople supplies can be unloaded into it from the water. Most Turkish warehouses are built some distance from the water front and a haul by a team or a long carry by porters is necessary

Own your own railroad. In Serbia each peasant owns his own railroad. It consists of a cart and a pair of oxen. Scores of cities are miles from the railroads and all communication with the outside world is by means of ox drawn carts over steep mountain roads. This picture shows a driver hauling American Red Cross supplies across the great Balkan divide to Frizren where a hospital is maintained to care for the surgical and medical needs of one hundred thousand people living forty miles from a railroad

Quiet Byway in Venice. Venice is a labryinth of quiet canals. Expeditions into the heart of the city reveal scene after scene like this one, where a gondolier is delivering a load of supplies to a Venetian apartment house. While American Red Cross workers labored in Venice, during the trying days that followed Caporetto, memebers of the mission found quarters in scenic surroundings such as this. While the Piave battle raged, and the fate of Venice was double, the Red Cross supplies distributed from a station near the scene of this photo, relieved the suffering thousands of refugee families

The Only Railroad in Albania. This is the Tirana Durazzo Express which like the Toonerville Trolley "meets all Boats". It is a narrow guage military line built by the Austrians during their occupation of the country. When they evacuated they destroyed all locomotives and the road was considered useless. Upon the arrival of the American Red Cross with relief supplies for the country, the American workers suggested real horsepower for the line, and this is the result. Many tons of Red Cross supplies have been carried over this line and it affords some relief to weary travellers in the country

Left by the "Sick Men" of Europe. Old landmarks such as the one in this picture give visible evidence of the waning power of the Star and Crescent. Built by the Turks in their Trek towards Vienna many years ago, it marks the last great outpost of the Musselmans along the Danube. The old fort is located at Semendria in Serbia and is now used as a railroad yard. Americans are now using a part of it for the storage of Red Cross supplies that are distributed to the destitute towns along the Danube. In the foreground is the type of water transportation that Americans are using in the distribution of these relief supplies
